The Government of the Russian Federation has approved amendments to the Regulation on Fees, introducing higher charges:
- For the examination of applications (during trademark registration);
- For the renewal of trademarks.
The amount of these fees will now depend on the number of goods and/or services listed within a given Nice Classification class. An additional charge of 500 roubles will apply for each item exceeding 10 within the same class.
For example, if an application is filed for all goods (197 items) under Class 25 of the Nice Classification (clothing, footwear), the fees will amount to:
- Application examination – RUB 111,500 (instead of RUB 13,000);
- Trademark renewal – RUB 120,500 (instead of RUB 22,000).
Recommendations from VERBA LEGAL experts:
- File trademark applications before 4 October 2025 if detailed lists of goods/services are required;
- Renew trademarks expiring next year before 4 October 2025;
- Shorten the list of goods/services if the trademark is to be renewed after 4 October 2025 and includes more than 10 items per class which are not actually in use. This will reduce the renewal fee.
We believe the new fee structure will encourage more precise drafting of specifications when filing applications. In turn, this may reduce the number of oppositions based on similar trademarks during the examination stage.
